60 minutes

Whilst maintaining our foothold on the Moon, you are carrying out your daily duties in Control. The station is thriving, residents are happy and The crop studies are a success. You are paving the way for the first colonists to leave earth and join you in just a few short years. With construction going to plan and the fundamentals all in place, something goes seriously wrong in the Control Room isolating your team from the rest of the Lunar Module and your colony mission becomes an escape mission.

The Moon is an unforgiving environment, when your L.A.I.K.A shuts down, AI has sent the Base into chaos.

You need to manually override core systems in order to use the emergency exit to the THR module (Terra Habitation & Cultivation Research) so your team rejoin your fellow colonists in the main complex.  Time is pressing, oxygen is falling and you have less than 60 minutes to restore it before you are replaced by countless applicants back on Earth.

Well it had to happen, after 90 odd escape rooms I had my first failure!

The game took place in a beautiful space, really well designed and ticked a lot of my sci-fi nerd boxes. There was a clear story line and this led to some clever and challenging puzzles throughout the room.

The clue system was on a โ€˜Three for free and anymore adds to your timeโ€™ system. Iโ€™ve not had a lot of experience with this kind of system and I think thatโ€™s where it started to go wrong.

My friend who I played with was more keen to ask for clues than I was, I think I wanted to ration them out and not go over the time. But in hindsight I realise if we had have asked sooner than we would have got out.

Talking to Sam our host he did say that the rooms had been designed to make you really work hard for the victory. With red herrings you had to work to find in the first place thrown in and some ways of inputting a solution not put in a logical order, Iโ€™ve never felt so much like a room was designed to really stack the odds against you escaping. It was a novel experience and I know next time to put my pride aside, take the time penalties and make sure I escape.

If youโ€™re planning to play only one game at Carmarthen and youโ€™re struggling to choose, look no further. The stronger narrative combined with more tactile challenges made Lunar Base Alpha not just my preferred game at The Escape Game Carmarthen, but also my preferred game across both venues.
